AXXONN or (AXX)off?

1 Sep

Super lo-fi synthers AXXONN are set to release their album “Let’s Get It Straight” this coming October. Off-putting drone and noise you’d expect to hear only seconds from death (and even then, you’d be asking “Can anyone else hear it too?”) isn’t everyone’s thing. But if there is one thing the debut title track “Let’s Get It Straight” needs, it’s more of it.

Hello Spring. We’d say we missed you but really, this is Brisbane. We only get shades of Summer here. However Spring, you’ve brought along the Brisbane Festival to banish this dreary chill, and I hear the Valley Fiesta‘s coming along as well to cause a ruckus.

BIGSOUND 2010

The industry behemoth BIGSOUND (all caps means it’s super important) is back in Brisbane from September 8-10 (Wednesday to Friday). Why should you care? There’ll be 60 showcase gigs in 6 venues over 2 nights, and tickets are $29.20 for one night or $46 for both. As if that wasn’t enough, Valley Fiesta is now on from September 10-12, which means Friday and Saturday night are also going to be filled with free live music. Get excited.

Scraps (from myspace.com/sssscrapssss/photos/308871)

Let’s keep things simple. Matt Kennedy (BATS interview here) videos gigs around Brisbane and puts them on a blog called Eternal Soundcheck. I like this blog. My favourite find from this blog is Scraps.

Bachelor Kisses (from flickr.com/photos/51769638@N00/1263176588/)

This is about opportunism (look it up). I ranted about cover versions, now I’m using one as an excuse to write about a great Swedish band on a Brisbane-centric blog. Catch is, the song they covered is by an old Brisbane band called The Go-Betweens. No, I haven’t heard of them either.

The Mission in Motion do pop punk

The Mission in Motion (www.myspace.com/themissioninmotion)

I am an advocate for pop punk. What? Are you kidding me? What the hell is wrong with you? You must be talking about that poppy, teenybopper kind of watered down shit that Nova has just picked up on and that screams from my little sister’s stereo while I try and block it out by listening to something a with a little more hipster merit that’s underground and not well known.

Yeah, well. I am an advocate for that kind of  pop punk thing. I enjoy it more than any normal person should. And you know what, Mission in Motion do that kind of thing pretty damn well.
